Bloggers giving out too many links

February 18th, 2008 by the noob

tupac.jpgI see a lot of useless links to my blog. Every day i follow these links i see around a hundred other links. I think entrecard is partly to blame, but some of these idiots are linking like crazy just for the fun of it. Even if a blog doesn’t have good stats, the links should be guarded. Links are valuable. Bloggers should take better care of linking to other blogs. Sending out mass links in a single post, doesn’t do much. All that link juice is divided. A dollar is pretty good. But when you divide a dollar by a hundred, you’re only left with a penny. Not very good for making money with your blog is it.

When a blog links to my blog, i always go check it out. I try to leave a comment. If i see that the blogger is linking to every Tom, Dick, and Harry, i won’t feel very special. So if you’re a holiday link maniac, or an entrecard linker, know that your links mean very little. The value of your link dies if you’re giving it away like the high school slut. Links should be special. I learned in high school econ that value is created by scarcity. I could keep going on and on about this, but you guys should already know the value of your links. I mentioned it before. Tupac said it best, “lasy tease me, cause i don’t want it if it’s that easy.” Words to live by. Or should i say words to blog by. hee hee.

Yup you’re quite right. Linking is an art - just like blogging. You can’t just throw anything on the web and expect everyone to flock to your site. Well, unless you’re a genius.

ben- linking on a daily basis is good practice, but the people who mass link on one post, are just silly. no more link magic. i say, max of 5 links per post. 1 would be best, but up to three is totally cool.

I like to link to another post of mine in most posts, as well as one or two links to others. My blogroll only displays three links at a time.
You can do the same with text links, rotate them with a simple line of php code.

witchypoo- i think that’s a great strategy. im not good with php so i don’t know what you’re talking about. help me witchypoo ;)

I am not quite sure I understand but don’t we want linkbacks? Not that I like to everything and everyone…but I link to blog posts in relation to what I am writing.

jackie- we do want linkbacks. but not all links are created equal. some links suck. like those massive entrecard linking posts that contain like a hundred random links. that type of link is kinda useless. still better then nothing, but it’s only worth pennies. i’ve seen how you use your links, i think you’re doing fine. I’m not talking about links, i’m talking about people who give out links likes nothing.

Awe yeahhhh, it’s that “California Luv” or should I say, “California ‘link’ Luv” RIP Tupac.
BTW–nice shot across at the “holiday” linker, Kris Kringle.

Also, as far as link juice goes, I believe that the words used for the link are important.
IOW– If I link to this site with the word “friend” that does not really help out the Noob. But if my link says “make money blog” then that is a good link.
I think Google looks at the description of the link doesn’t it? It’s called a “Google bomb” when a site is linked to often using certain key words.
One famous one is “dangerous cult” when you Google that you get christian science or one of those hollywood religions.
feel free to correct me if I am wrong
