Many of you know that i’ve been getting into domaining. I like playing around with domain names because it’s somewhat similar to what i do as my day job. Domain names are the virtual real estate of the web. Like real estate, they go up in value. Some domain names are listed for millions of dollars. I also like playing with domains because it reminds me of my youth. When i was a young kid, i used to collect baseball cards. I would buy Becket magazine and check to see if my cards went up or not. I had a pretty valuable collection of trading cards. When you’re buying domains, you have to be careful to not buy useless names. Is it worth buying domain names with Google PR? I’ve done a few experiments with this in the past 6 months. I purchased some domains that already had PR on them. I wanted to see if i would lose the PR when the next update occured. I first bought my PR domain for around $40. I was such a noob. I now realize that i overpaid for that domain. If you are thinking about buying dropped or expired domains with PR, don’t pay too much for them. Buy them if you like the name, but don’t buy it for the PR. Cause you’re going to lose the PR. I try to gobble up all relevant “make money online” news. Wendy from wendy’s reel wrote a response post about ICANN’s decision to allow any type of domain extension. So, in a couple of year, companies and individuals can register a whatever.whatever domain. This is big news for domainers and webmasters. The newer extensions (.info,.biz) haven’t caught up to dot coms, and they never will. But, having your own extension could mean gold to people who invest in some key extensions. There have been talks that a .sex extension or a .money could start bidding wars. They are thinking about pricing the extensions at around $100,000 a pop. Do i think that this will change the value of .coms? Not really! Did .info or .biz change the game much? Nope! I think web surfers are used to punching in .com to get to a site. I recently bought bloggernoob dot info. I was too cheap to pick up the other TLDs. Who knows, maybe one of you guys will pick up the dot org or dot net. If my blog blows up and i make it big, maybe i’ll have to buy those domains from one of you. Probably not. Anyway, i wanted to write up a quick little opinion piece for yall.
