Does putting up porn affiliate links make you a pornographer

November 13th, 2007 by the noob

parishilton.jpgPornography. I was looking through various money making schemes and started thinking about porn. First off, what is porn? Do personal adult ads like adultfriendfinder count as porn? I started to ask myself “should i secretly set up a porn website?” I’m sure many of you have thought about it. Isn’t the internet built on porn. If porn didn’t exist, i honestly believe that the internet would just be for college scientist types. Porn made the internet popular fast. Some religious groups and squares might get offended but i don’t care. I don’t have many readers and if you’re a uber religious freak then i don’t want you to read this blog. That said, lets begin our examination with making money with porn.

The value of porn
I read somewhere that porn.com and sex.com are two of the most valuable domain names. Its not business.com or money.com.

Because porn is taboo and shouldn’t really be discussed i figured i’d tackle the subject since nobody really reads this blog anyway.

4 advantages of becoming a porn affiliate.

1. One advantage is that you get hooked up with free porn. You don’t have to pay for porn anymore. Not paying for something is the same as making money.

2. If you are new to blogging or webmastering you will learn a lot of things by running a porn site. Porn marketing is a different more aggressive form of marketing and it’s important to learn it.

3. You will notice that it is easier to grow. I have a porn site that i set up around the same time i set up bloggernoob and it gets twice as many uniques then this blog. Cause you see more result, it helps you not to give up on trying to blog for money.

4. It’ll spice up your sex life.

  3. Dylan Says:

I just got started in this “business”. Setting up a simple site and an affiliate program is easy. The trick is getting traffic. Adwords has been working ok but im looking for something better. http://www.cashmoneylatinas.com

  4. bloggernoob Says:

misterpoo- too many to mention here. if you’re really interested, email and i’ll point you to some dark doors. :)

kp- i’ll try to get some porn type aggressive marketing tricks up soon for nonporn sites. i think that’s a great title for the post.

dylan- nice site. curious at how much you make with it?

  5. Kristen Says:

Hey, unusual (or not?) question for you:

My boyfriend and I are considering starting a porn site for a little extra income and to make the sex we’re already having even more fun and rewarding.

I can’t find ANYTHING online on where to begin with this. Do you know of any good start up resources? I think we’re “marketable,” and we aren’t really hurting for money, so I don’t want to aggressively market, necessarily, just kind of let it ride to see what happens.

    I’d appreciate some suggestions. Thanks!

  6. the noob Says:

kristin- the more unusual the more fun it is for me. :) i think it could be a good idea. as long as you two are comfortable with it. i think i might be able to help you. maybe shoot me an email if you’re interested.

    to the question above,

i think either i just putting up a porn affiliate or setting up a porn site, people will relate me to porn. does that make me a pornographer? i may say no, but i blog for my readers, right? if they don’t like what they see, they might leave

  12. the noob Says:

louis- i guess it depends on the point of view. if you have a christian blog, and you put porn affiliates. that’s probably a no no. but if you have a sleasy make money blog…like me. why not :)

I to say that out of all your posts this has to be the most interesting one, I just wish you had gone into some more detail on it. I think a post about using porn tactics for non-porn blogs would be a really great post!

My blog which caters to aspiring pickup artists tends to get quite a bit of traffic for people who are searching for porn. Some tactics I use are titling my posts with sexual innuendos. I often get people visiting who search for things like, “women kissing women” and “sex with best friends girlfriend”, those are just two of many examples. Also I tend to visit various sex blogs to leave comments, this also brings in some visitors too.

Im sure you have some better tactics considering youre running a porn site and id love to see a post about that.

    -Matt

  21. the noob Says:

matt- I didn’t want to get into specifics cause i didn’t want my blog to be known as an adult type blog. I really wish i could go more into detail, but porn is not a mass market thing. Yes, having anything to do with porn makes you a pornographer. It does not matter how much you pretend about it. Your conscience will keep on picking at you.

For one that is ignorance of the potential damage porno can do, the potential income might look enticing.

Maybe you are not aware that some of the advocates of porno business are accomplice to child abuse, women abuse and such evil. Some pictures are gotten from unwilling victims.

Promoting such can never be an option to be considered by me. God forbid.

As a family man and a Christian I will never have anything to do with such. I will rather not be rich than have anything to do with porno.

I guess I better stop here because this is not my blog. I hate porno and I have no regard for those that promote it.

  25. the noob Says:

naija- i value and respect your opinion. i guess your you draw the line close to the right. i lean left. i think porn is inescapable online. if you run an online business or make money online, you will run into porn somehow. either advertiser or link. my blog could be considered porn to some strict fundamentalist religious types. just cause i have a picture of paris hilton. my pastor things like paris hilton is porn with legs

  26. abel Says:

    hi..noob, naija and all..
i just look arround the net to study about ‘porn business’. From all above comment, just naija’s attractive me and your reply surely.
I do love sex, but a person like naija is needed to reduce ‘bad people behaviour’.
So i think it’s welcome to him giving comment here and reminded us. It’s balancing. Reminder.
I think for whom make money from this business should not to ‘extreme expose and spread’ it.
I don’t know how but i think by we can.

  27. buffy Says:

I’ve been the affiliate manager of an adult personals site for the past 5 years…I am NOT a pornographer!

There is a fine line between adult and porn and what I promote is definitely ‘adult’ but do others really know the difference? Who says what makes something pornographic? It’s a little like art…in the interpretation.

If you think by promoting a ‘porn’ site it’s going to make you millions…think again! If you want to promote an adult dating site…email me!

If you guys want to make a little money on the side or just want to try a really good sex product, take a look at http://www.mysticmedicines.com They sell this product called “Royal Tiger” that is advertised as a “SEX TONIC”. Me and my boyfriend have been using it and I must say, this stuff is really something. He felt powerful effects right away, but it took me a couple weeks of using it (I guess to build up in my system) before an amazing thing happened. I actually squirted for the first time. I’ve wanted to do this for so long, but never could. I almost couldn’t believe it. I contacted them for an explanation and I got a very detailed, scientific/medical explanation that was pretty fascinating. I asked them if they sold “wholsale” to regular people and they said they did. They treat nonprofessionals and nonretailers as “independant distributors” and allow them to sell it to friends, family, associates, etc. I bought 12 bottles from them and sold most of them already. I’m giving it to all my girlfriends. They give a good deal. I got all the bottles at 50% off! Pretty cool.

  40. xxxPwnage Says:

  41. jeflin Says:

I believe the porn industry is tough. Although you get more traffic than a normal site but then you are also up against other porn sites where thousands of uniques is normal and still not attract advertisers.

Legal and ethical issues may also make it less worthwhile to engage in porn.

I was wondering what your opinion is of affiliate programs that offer free webhosting. Some of us don’t want to have our own porn site for various reasons, but would love to get in on the affiliate action somehow. I noticed Nastydollars and a few others offer free webhosting. Someone at an adult forum told me that such a free site wouldn’t get sign-ups from other webmasters and thus my traffic would be very low. I’m a total noob to this, so would appreciate your opinion about these free hosting programs. Thanks!

Using thumblogger…would be interested if anyone else has promoted Met Art or used thumblogger, etc. I’ve been reading the forum at thumblogger and the general agreement is that you need 30-40 or more blogs to make any money. I think the days are over when you can make any real money from only one or two blogs or sites. Diversify into all the niches….

  63. the noob Says:

u should get your own hosting and domain. blogspot is blocking ur site. i don’t see much on that site yet. i guess u just started it?

  64. Honey West Says:

    Hi,
Yes, thumblogger is free adult blog hosting. The Met Art site is in development, more softcore, and what’s there is not finished. I prefer going this route for now rather than buying my own domain. I’m just learning the affiliate business so wanted something where I’m not putting out any $$ while learning. I think any site can make money if people can find it on the Net and if it’s content they want. At least thumblogger is designed for adult hosting, unlike blogspot, etc. It may not be the optimum but for now that’s what I have to work with. Maybe later I can move on to other things….thanks for the advice though.

  65. Honey West Says:

If you want to look at my blog in development, it’s at http://teenmethotties.thumblogger.com

it’s taken me awhile to learn the thumblogger system and I’m a total noob when it comes to html, links, etc. but I’m working on it. Gotta start somewhere, so I am. I don’t even consider Met Art to be “porn”, more softcore erotica….thanks!

  66. the noob Says:

honey west- yeah. it’s good that you’re not putting money into it while u learn. When you feel more comfortable, get your own host and domain quick. It only costs 10/month for hosting, and 10/year for domain. very small investments. Don’t get too used to the thumblogger system. cause you’re gonna switch to your own hosted wordpress or other cms. ;) i love softcore erotica. Im a fan of all kinds of erotica. ;)

  67. Honey West Says:

Thanks for the advice - yeah, softcore is nice to start out with, although I don’t know how popular it is with guys who are the main buyers :-) But Met Art must be doing something right, to be as big as they are.

What’s the difference between a paid host/domain and a free system like thumblogger? I’ve heard this from other sources too, not to use a free host. Isn’t a site a site? If the site is in the SEs and people like the content, why would it matter what the domain is? Is it a matter of stability of the system? Or what? I’ve looked at some adult hosting and the ones I’ve seen are more than $10/mth, although I haven’t done that much research on it.

My other issue with buying a domain is privacy. I’m sure there are many affiliates who don’t want the whole world knowing that they own an adult domain. Unless there’s another way to do it, anybody online can find out who owns a domain. And especially if an affiliate goes in a more hardcore direction, they really don’t want their privacy compromised that way. So, its not just an issue of money, it’s privacy too. Any way to get around that? If I can make money using thumblogger, or maybe setting up multiple thumblogger blogs, I will do that instead of buying a domain. Also, I’ll never be able to build a website from the ground up myself, so will always need a template of some sort. Another reason to use services like thumblogger that provide templates. So, I’d love your feedback on these issues. Thanks so much for your advice!

  68. the noob Says:

honeywest- you can register a domain with privacy guard. It’ll only cost you like 7 dollars more a year. That way, you domain registered info, will remain private. It won’t be in the whois database. And trust me, your hosting bill should not go over 10 dollars a month. I can understand starting without spending money. but if you really want to make money, u will need your own domain and hosting. It’s because you have more control of the site. and it’s because you actually own the content that you work hard for. Thumblogger is making money for the guys who own thumblogger as well. You want to own 100% of you site, and future of the site as well.

  69. Honey West Says:

Thanks for the tip about domain privacy. I’ll keep it in mind, although I’ve seen enough of the Net to know there is no such thing as privacy. It’s good that it keeps it out of the whois database, but there’s probably still some way for someone to find out who owns the domain if they really want to, especially if it’s a very hardcore “out there” type of site that rubs somebody the wrong way. I certainly understand that if thumblogger went under tomorrow, all the blogs are lost, although I do back up my stuff. As far as control over the site, as an affiliate, I abide by the sponsor’s rules, and that would be the case no matter where it was hosted. You say I’d own the content if I had my own domain. Could you clarify that? So far, thumblogger hasn’t interfered with what I put on my site. As an affiliate, how do I own the content of Met Art or any other sponsor? Maybe these are dumb questions, but I truly am trying to understand what the difference is in stability, freedom, or other aspects between free and hosted domains. To a lot of people, $100 isn’t much per year. But every cent adds up, and it always seems there’s some new cost that comes up when a person is running their own site. It’s always like, “Oh, now you have to have this and this and this and this” and before you know it, you’re spending way more than $100 a year on some basic stuff. I am trying to keep costs down while I evaluate whether I can even succeed in driving traffic to the one site I have. I’ve seen people waste money on so many things. Again, I do understand that there’s an issue of stability with a free host that could disappear (hopefully not for awhile anyway). Is it always a case of to make money you have to spend money? But anyway, thanks for the advice about the domain registration….at least it’s some protection.

  70. the noob Says:

honeywest- the way i see it. free hosted blogs content is not 100 percent yours. I just feel like all of my hard working is going into the pockets of whoever owns that site. Things get a bit tricky with ownership and such. If you like it on thumblogger. u should stay. If it’s making you money then it’s all good. Everybody has preferences. I prefer to have more control of my websites. ;)

  71. Honey West Says:

I certainly understand the concern about a free service suddenly disappearing, but even if I had my own domain, I would be using someone else’s content as an affiliate. The only thing I would own would be my own text entries that I wrote myself. All the pics and other promo content would belong to the sponsor. Unless I started my own own porn paysite with all my own content (which I have no way to do nor interest in doing), the sponsor owns the content when I’m just an affiliate, right?

Thumblogger makes money, but I presume it’s from advertisers like other free sites do. For now, it’s okay for me. I just started it, so not making any money yet, but hope I will over the next six months. Thanks again for your feedback!

Come by and take a look, we can custom design adult sites or TGPs for any aspiring porn site owners. Email me for a quote.

Good to see your blogging is making some cash too Noob - well done!

pwnage- congrats on the ranking. i think ur site is growing. one of my readers mentioned u. ;)

  82. http://www.squidoo.com/extra-money-to-your-paypal Says:

I heard a majority of all the sites on the internet are porn based, so that can either help you make money or not because its so cluttered.

  83. the noob Says:

squido writer- yup yup. it can hold u back, or convince u that theres money in porn. i like to think that popular niches are a mixed bag of chips. it’s popular so money is there, but since it’s popular, it’s hard to get noticed.

  84. whorehey Says:

I’m a porn affiliate and I love it. Looking at naked people all day is much more exciting than working with adsense or promoting mainstream programs. The only downside is that it’s a lot easier to get distracted while working. lol

I did take a break from it because I started to feel guilty about selling sex, but then I realized that there’s always going to be a demand for porn whether we like it or not, so I might as well give people what they want and make some money from it in the process.

  85. the noob Says:

whorehey- it all depends on where you draw the line. and what you consider to be porn. not sure if porn is a bad thing. ;) it’s good that you’re getting into and enjoy being a porn affiliate, you really should consider getting your own domain and hosting. it probably will increase your earnings potential. ;)

  86. Davey Says:

I run a lot of adult blogs and free sites and I make a lot of money from it but its hard work. the single best source of information I have seen for people wishing to get started in using adult affiliate programs is xxxwebmasterxxx.com. It’s a gold mine for newbies and more seasoned bloggers alike.
As for GFY, yes its great but I wouldnt say its newbie friendly at all. If you ask a simple question in there they are more likely to take the pi** lol.
The other thing worth mentioning is that you can decide what you want to sell. I only do topless stuff and some full nudity but i dont work with anything explicit. In fact here in the UK you could buy similar images in any newsagent or even newspaper in many cases. Hardcore is easier to sell of course, but there is a good market for good looking girls (and guys) in lingerie etc ;)
good luck to anyone considering it.

  90. Brian Says:

I love the job honestly. But it is a ton of work. I shoot all of my own content, as well as i am a content provider for some big sites as well. I came across Sophia and instantly knew this was solo girl material. She has been live for 1 month and is doing pretty good.

I’ve never put up a porn site or made money from porn but believe me I have thought about it more than once. Just don’t really know how to go about it or if I could ever compete with what’s already out there. I hear it can be very profitable and if you can learn the internet marketing game in porn then the rest is easy.

  101. Jenny Fletcher Says:

I am horrified that anyone should consider making money this way.

Porn helped to wreck my first marriage and resulted in a prison sentence for someone I know.

It is degrading to both men and women, encourages people trafficking, child abuse and violence against women.

I really beg you and all your commenters to disassociate yourselves from this evil trade, by profiting from porn, you encourage it and give it legitimacy.

I am not a Christian, and I do not speak from any other religious standpoint. This comes purely from personal experience.

  102. Danny Says:

    Hi all!
I’ve read all the posts and I’m pretty impressed. I guess im starting a porn site. he he.
But there is one question. Who should i target?
I kinda wanna start a gay porn site, but then it hit me that creating a lesbian site or something would make me more money. Since there are more straight than gay peopleXD
    What do you think?

  108. Lauren Says:

This is an interesting topic. I sell adult toys and products online, I have been reticent to add porn for some of the reasons stated here. At the same time I aim to be women friendly with the products and the non explicit nature of the products I sell. I understand the argument porn can be very detrimental to women, I have to admit I really enjoy watching porn and it really spices things up. I have a very hard time find “respectable” porn or if it really exists. An oxymoron, perhaps? I am also trying to make money online and with adult products because it seems obvious. My angle, however, is women friendly and I really believe in it. Besides aren’t most toys really for women? Do you think aggressive marketing might work for what I’m trying to do? There are a few of us out there but it is easy to get lost in the really big sex toy sites. L

  113. theJackal Says:

Yes, and as you said, I have thought about “secretly” doing so. Keyword is “secretly.” The fact that you have to sneak around and do it just reinforces the fact that what you’re doing is wrong. So, if you are hesitant to put up a porn site, even just links, because you think it’s immoral, then don’t do it.

And, how funny that Paris Hilton’s picture is at the top of this post. lol.

  114. Business blog Says:

The comments on this page and article shows just how popular porn is - god only knows why it is so taboo! The other good adult business is the phnoe sex industry

By the way, when I saw the number of comments when I first arrived here, I was shocked, too-sort of.

  117. the noob Says:

the jackal- thanks for the assist. ;)

  118. Business blog Says:

Thanks for the feed-back Noob, much appreciated. BTW I love all the photos on your posts, it makes reading your posts a pleasure when they begin with a sexy young lady - they say sex sells. Do you have any copy right issues with these or are they from some free pic site?

  119. Make Money Online Business Says:

Adult sites were huge moneymakers a few years ago but all the free porn has almost ruined the business. Still you can make some money with niche-targeted adlut sites.

  120. webfool Says:

Of course, puuting links make you part of the porn/adult industry. You have to be 100% comfortable with it, as the end result of porn will enevitably hurt some people, but then again banks, big corperations, insrance companies etc , are sucessful because they hurt people I dare say there are 1000’s of bankers & hedge fund managers who are having a high life on other peoples misfortunes - that’s life. Porn is just another industry and the fact that people feel uncomforatble with it is more down to social stigmatization and embaressment, rather than rational decison making.

My mother drew a distinction between achievement and success. She said that ‘achievement is the knowledge that you have studied and worked hard and done the best that is in you. Success is being praised by others, and that’s nice, too, but not as important or satisfying. Always aim for achievement and forget about success.’

  133. statstation.com Says:

I run a site called statstation.com I know at first glance you wouldn’t think it would be a affiliate porn site, but it is! And the great news is that i set up a tgp on it, so I have galleries rotating daily without me having to do much maintenance. I’m currently using 3 affiliate sites, and they all seem to be doing their share of conversions. It helps if you get a domain that already had traffic coming to it, even if it’s not targeted traffic, most people stop and check out the scenery when it catches their eye (if ya know what I mean) haha. I’m nowhere near a millionaire, but I’m making a good share of disposable income with this, and that’s all i wanted anyway. Great article by the way.

    Nice artice to start with!
But i have a question. I want to build my own porn site. And you have the affilates sites which you can use to put advertisements on our site, but I’m looking for a company (or such) who provides links to other sites and pay you if visitors click the links.
So my site would not contain actual porn, but only links. Bit like http://www.thehun.com. Can’t find a company/website who provide the links.
Would you give some advise please??

  138. statstation.com Says:

I posted here over a month and a half ago and just thought I’d give an update. My site has had a couple ups and downs. I’m now on the hunt for an excellent way to get additional traffic. I’m looking to do it without spending a ton of money, but I would like it to be somewhat targeted. The domain is a silent goldmine because it had been registered in the past, however, there’s nothing in the url that would make anyone think it’s an adult site. I’ve been trying to refine my SEO, because I noticed a lot of traffic was coming from people searching for mechanical equipment. I guess my keywords need to propagate through the search engines. I purchased a domain on ebay a while back “beaverfinder.com” and I hope to develop that in the near future as a more focused adult affiliate endeavor. I think my site in it’s current state might be overwhelming for some visitors. While I was developing it, I was thinking back to when I was a kid (mid teens) online surfing adult sites, and remembered that I used to click on anything that was the slightest bit interesting to me (tits), and I was hoping that even though it’s late in the game for this niche industry, that some people might still be like that.
