Too many ads?

gayflag.jpgI have mixed feeling about this issue. How do you know when you have too many ads on your blog? How many ads are too many? It’s all relative to the type of blog you own. It also depends on the quality of your content. Also, the layout and spacing varies this equation.

The noob definitely doesn’t have a lot of ads on this blog. But some might argue that i do a lot of sponsored postings. Well, you could be right in saying that, but i have a great counter argument. Do you pay my bills? Didn’t think so. As long as you have quality content on your blog, your readers will excuse your sell out posts. They’ll learn to ignore them just like those stupid adsense ads that people never click. You readers will understand that you need to make money. It’s better then selling rocks or turning tricks right?

You have too many ads…
If your ad widgets slow your blog’s load time to dial up speed, then you have too many ads.
If 50% of your readers say you have too many ads, then you have too many ads.
If you have more ads then posts, then you have too many ads.
If you have adsense and adbrite on your blog, then you have too many ads.
If you have ads on your header, sidebar, and footer, then you have too many ads.
If your blog has unmatching colored ads that resemble the gay flag, then you have too many ads.

People (well, Finns at least) would really have to love the content and hate the ads in your blog, before they would bother to tell you that you should drop some of those ads.

Instead of complaining about ads, they would either just stop reading your blog or subscribe to RSS feed and use that as their only method for reading your blog.

As concrete example, I always have hard time on finding anything from problogger.net’s main page. Have I bother to complain about it to Darren?
Nah, I just subscribed into his RSS feed and use RSS for getting his stories in move convenient format.

I am a design freak, so if it’s obstructing the design of that blog, then I don’t like it, and won’t read that blog. If they are small and neatly placed, then I don’t mind so much. :)

If it pops up I piss off.

I only try to offer ads relative to my content. If people are there for the articles then I figure that the ads should relate to the overall theme of the blog. As long as they arent too far off topic, and they dont become obvious and intrusive then I dont think there can be too many.

juha- you’re finnish i assume. yeah, i guess people who don’t like your blog, don’t even bother to write something negative.

chica- i can tell you’re a freak. just didn’t know it was design oriented. :)

tim- haha “if it pops up i piss off” i thought you were talking about something else entirely for a sec there.

Hey Noob, I am no expert but if you are worried about your blog, I think it is fine. Your ads do not interfere with the content. Plus, I like to see where successful bloggers get their money from, ha ha ha. I tried a different tactic..I try to keep all my ads/affiliates travel related and I made some extra pages for my travel shopping affiliates. That way, if people are looking for something, they can go to those pages. Would you mind stopping by and giving me your opinion? I am soooo new at this.
    Thanks,

annie-successful blogger? moi? not there yet but thanks for the mention annie. you’re too kind. i’m just a noob trying to find a nut. i’ve visited your blog and left you a comment with some suggestions. i like your theme and content. travel blogs could become very profitable if grown properly. i’m thinking of starting one of my own in the near future.

I’m still not there with the ads. I don’t want to litter my site with stuff that doesn’t pay diddly, but I’m reading other blogs to find out what works. Right now, my traffic isn’t at a place where I need to be concerned about placing ads, but I only started in November.

Noob- Thanks for stopping by and leaving me some suggestions. When I picked myself up off the floor (only kidding, ha ha ha)I took your ideas to heart and actually changed a few things. I dumped a few things that were slow to load and I shortened my recent post number to 10. There are still a few slow loaders but they are what makes me….ME!! Thanks again and stop by frequently! BTW-what is a noob?

Excellent read, I just passed this onto a friend who was doing some research on that. And he actually bought me lunch because I found it for him smile Therefore let me rephrase that: Thanks for lunch!
