Using do follow comments to your advantage
I was thinking about all of the blogs that have their comment sections with the do follow attribute. There are newbies who purchases links for their blog when they can just leave a comment on a do follow blog. When you’re new to blogging, it’s important to not spend any money. Finding ways to not spend money is a form of income isn’t it? Blogs that waste money on useless things are like companies that spend millions on marketing when they can’t even sell their product.
When you start building up links for you blog, visit a lot of different blogs and look for do follow blog. Read the posts and leave a comment. Leave your keywords in those do follow comments and maybe you’ll get yourself a free link. If you do this on a small or medium blog, you’ll probably get a visit from the blogger. It’s like killing two birds with one stone.
A good way of using do follow comments to your advantage is by commenting on as many do follow blogs as possible. In the name field, type in your desired keywords. (make money blog)
then leave the url of your most popular make money blog post. This will get you some deep links, and help you with you keywords. all free.

Good idea, now my question is how would one figure out whether or not the blog is a do follow or not?
February 23rd, 2008 at 7:16 am
jared- blogs sometimes state that they are do follow. i guess it’s up to you to believe them. but if you want to do sleuthing. you can pick up a tool bar that shows links on any website. and check the links to see if the comments are in fact do follow or not. you can find the firefox plugin http://www.bloggernoob.com/if-you-have-a-website-you-need-to-add-this-mozilla-extension/30/
February 23rd, 2008 at 7:47 am
Or you can just go to a comment that someone else has left, but make sure that the person entered in a URL.
Then right click on that persons name and go to properties. If the “Relation” field says “nofollow” or “external nofollow”, then you will not get a back link. If it says “external” then you will get a back link.
Also, some blogs (including mine) require that you post three times (number varies by blog) before the “do follow” takes effect. The reason is this helps stop spam posters (kind of). Hope that helps.

jonathon- thanks buddy for the info. you could be my copy editor
i learned something new today

February 23rd, 2008 at 8:23 am
jonathon- haha. you’ll probably make it to the next round. i think your toughest competitor will be psychicgeek
February 23rd, 2008 at 8:25 am
Thanks for the extension guys, it would be better than checking around the source codes and find the link etc.

Hi,
Michael from Germany here.
I absolutely agrre with you.
But you even could go one step furter by using the CommentLuv plugin.
Which will not only give commenters a do follow link, but even throws up a link to the commenters own latest post.
You can see the plugin at work at my blog or fetch it direxctly from here:
http://www.fiddyp.co.uk/commentluv-wordpress-plugin/
Give some LUV to your commenters.
Regards,
Michael
February 23rd, 2008 at 11:10 am
mert- your welcome. its the best one i’ve found and it’s the one i have on my firefox.
emarketscout- yeah, i’ve gotten a lot of request for the commentluv plugin. i haven’t jumped in and installed it yet, but i think i will have to soon.
thanks for the suggestion.
February 23rd, 2008 at 11:38 am
the comment Luv plugin displays links to commentator’s last blog post, but these links are nofollow links.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:21 pm
When I installed CommentLuv, I also changed my header so that nofollow is off. There is a plugin for that. Really, a plugin for almost everything. And Noob? You really need a home link in your navbar for all those who come by way of feed readers. If you send me your nav code, I will insert it for you and send it back.
Then all you will have to do is upload the modified file to your server.
February 23rd, 2008 at 5:21 pm
Hey guys, I could be wrong, but I don’t think the COmmentLuv plugin gives your commenters a do follow link. It does however add the person’s last post.
The plugin I use to remove the “no Follow” is called LinkLove, which is what I was talking about in the last section of my comment above.
I checked this by going to commenters on my site with less than three comments, and even though I have commentluv, it still has the nofollow. As soon as they get to three comments (which is what I chose) then the commenters links become “do follow”
February 23rd, 2008 at 5:42 pm
I used this in the past, leaving comments in blogs to get backlinks, but I used my own name on the name field, no keywords, I still get backlinks with that, right?
February 23rd, 2008 at 10:16 pm
I’m still pretty lost with all this dofollow and nofollow stuff. Then again it seems in my niche either the parents really know their stuff or haven’t a clue and the science guys just seem in a league of their own :S
Must learn about all this nofollow/dofollow and SEO stuff
February 24th, 2008 at 12:15 am
@Bob
It isn’t that hard. Basically it means this:
no follow- When you put your website in the “website” section in a comment reply you DO NOT get a backlink.
do follow- When you put your website in the “website” section in a comment reply you DO get a backlink.
Backlinks help boost your sites ranking. Does that help?
February 24th, 2008 at 1:25 am
Oh Noob,
I learned something valuable today too. Thanks!
February 24th, 2008 at 3:56 am
Yeah I was reading about this a long time ago. It is a great tip. Commenting is important. I also notice people will visit your blog if you leave a comment on theirs. Commenting overall is great.
February 24th, 2008 at 7:09 am
bizgiftguru- im not technically sure how to chance the plugins to no follow. but i know that some bloggers have no follow on the comments. not just talking about commentluv
witchypoo- nice nice. i gotta get you to do some coding for me. i need help wtih my theme too
jonathon- thanks for the info. linkylove or linklove. i knew there was something out there.
killian- yeah u still get links. just saying that if you’re working on your keywords. and the blog has a no no follow attribute, u could use it to give your link the desired keywords. don’t u this too often cause you might get slapped by google. sandbox.
bobzilla- jonathon left u a nice def.
bob, i am lost too. just learn it baby steps. lets learn together bob.
jonathon- ur being so helpful on my comments. u looking for parttime work on my blog?
menopauseprincess- learn something new everyday. that’s my motto
mike- yup commenting should be practiced on a daily basis. thanks for the comment btw
February 24th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
Jonathon thanks for that. I know its simple but I keep forgetting which ones what. Your explanation helps with that though :0
February 24th, 2008 at 11:07 pm
bobzilla- jonathon is very helpful. if i wasn’t agaisnt guest posts, i would really want him to write for me.
February 25th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
I’m sorry, but this is a terrible idea.
Most bloggers, myself included, have become aware of this tactic and will mark your comment as spam. The comments are often irrelevant and weak, and do nothing to add value to blogs. Sure, it’ll work on the huge bloggers, because there’s only so much time in the day to moderate. But us who aren’t as popular could do irreplaceable damage to your brand.
February 25th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
rhys- no worries. this idea is not meant for everyone. i do think that not everybody has the same reaction. people talk about branding like it’s the most important thing. blog credibility is a myth. only a few have real branding. these are blogs like engadget and gizmodo. i don’t think it would cause that much damage to a regular blog like urs or mine. especially a noob blog. thanks for stopping by and commenting
February 26th, 2008 at 8:28 am
Branding and Keyword stuffing are two different things though.
If you commented on my blog as “the noob” or “blogger noob”, I probably would’ve let the comment through, it’s what you are associated with. I think that is more credible. The amount of people who search google for “The Gospel According To Rhys” or “Gospel Rhys” is staggering. That I think is a good sign of branding. A lot of blogs, particular in this niche, rely so much on branding, as the big guys have a monopoly on “Make Money Online” keyword.
If you commented on my blog as “Make Money Online”, I probably wouldn’t let it through. I’m sorry but on top of everything else less reputable SEO companies usually comment on multiple names (I remember one such case some guy with a domain commented on my blog with the e-mail submissions.gospelrhys@seosomecompany.com), and I find it quite degrading and an insult to my intelligence. I’m not saying everybody does it, just that one poster did.
As I said, I’m not criticizing your viewpoint, just making you aware of how some of us think
February 26th, 2008 at 9:19 am
rhys- yes branding and working the keywords are differenty things. the case with you and the seo company is a shame. but my theory is that most seo companies are just worthless. im a complete noob and i think i might know as much about seo as most of the so called seo experts. thanks for your detailed comments, i appreciate your input.
February 26th, 2008 at 10:18 pm
The CommentLuv plugin doesn’t create do_follow tags. There is, however, a whole blogroll of Do_follow blogs here:
http://www.feverishthoughts.com/do-follow-bloggers/
February 26th, 2008 at 11:46 pm
guys,
so which plugin should i use?
CommentLuv or Link LUv
as Jonathon mention that CommentLuv will give you nofollow link, since I just install it and already told my readers “you will get a back link”
so please help me
February 28th, 2008 at 1:34 am
Nice info. It really helps if you get those useful links for free. I guess blogger.com blog by default uses nofollow for comments.
February 28th, 2008 at 2:35 am
bloggingforthemoney- nice link. thanks
lankapo- it’s up to you. you have to tweak it up a bit to get the do follow going. get the linkluv and it should get the do follow going. just edit your post.
makemoneyonlineguide- yeah. u should really consider getting your own domain and hosting. doesn’t cost much. like 7 dollars a month. i can guarantee that you’ll make double that a month.
March 8th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
Are comment links being deprecated by Google? Do any of your readers know?
How would we know if this is happening?
March 9th, 2008 at 10:34 am
kermit- I actually don’t know the answer to your question. I think if it isn’t already, it could in the future. Google doesn’t like links that are paid. So with comment do follow links, i think they will consider that as a gaming the system type of link. I think they will tax people who do that in the future, if not already.
March 11th, 2008 at 11:13 pm
According to what I’ve read elsewhere (can’t locate the link currently), comment-spawned links don’t count fully in Google’s ranking system. However, I can’t see how Google could implement that, as any site could change the title of the comments section to anything they want. Of course, Google has some very smart coders working for it, so they might have a different system in place than what I’m imagining.
April 12th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Before you leave a comment please remember this:
Focus in your niche: The Google ranking algorithm judges on what types of sites link to you, and what types of sites you link to, thus a comment by a distasteful site will penalize your authority ranking on all you post links.
Dofollow comment policy: Many Dofollow blog have some policy that comments from new visitors will do not follow. They will follow comments if the person has become a regular visitor and they’ve left enough comments.
April 16th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
I have heard about the comment link system also being affected or downgraded by Google. It wouldn’t be hard to do that as they have access to all of the blogging platforms.
It would just take them programming in what to look for on a site, such as the code that is around the comments area, and not counting it even if it was do-follow.
Now, are they doing it? Not sure…only time will tell.

July 7th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
joyful digest- I’ve read that somewhere too. In my opinion, i think comment links count. Who’s to know that they are from comments if they changed the attibute and changed the comments sections. Google is not God. Can’t see everything.
internet income- great comment. yeah, u should comments within your niche. but a link from a off niche blog is still a link. Within your niche is better tho. Yeah, i’ve seen quite a few blogs that require you to have 3-5 comments before it become no no follow.
john- the internet is changing every second. If something new pops up, then people figure out ways to hack it. Whatever they do, i’m sure a few coders will figure out how to hide the tracks.

Its amazing, a lot of people are already a part of this “u comment i follow” movement. im glad i am! Dofollow makes people feel more appreciated when the post comment on your blog. As long as you are the decider for which comment is true and have value to your blog, you are safe with Google.

Interesting!
CommentLuv helps you reward your commentators by separating their name from their keywords in the link to their site. This gives them improved anchor text, which can help their site rank higher in the search engine results.
You can now leave a comment with your name as well as a keyword of your choice here and get a PR5 link back to your site! How cool is that? People pay big bucks for that and all you have to do is comment here.
August 18th, 2008 at 1:50 pm

I know this post is kind of old but I have a question on commenting.
Someone above said:
“Then right click on that persons name and go to properties. If the “Relation” field says “nofollow” or “external nofollow”, then you will not get a back link. If it says “external” then you will get a back link.”
When I right-click on a person’s name or even a URL in a comment on this blog I don’t see a Relation field. All I have is Protocol, Type, and Address.

September 2nd, 2008 at 6:03 pm
wendy- if u want to check if the comment u left is do follow, i recommend u instll the “seo quake” tool bar for firefox. just do a search on google for seo quake. it’ll take you to it. you can easily check to see which links are no follow on every site you visit. hope that helps.

Sorry to say this, and I’ll go against other posters here, but I don’t think this article was that interesting. From what I read in this blog in other occasion, you can do much better than that…oh well, I wouldn’t be that surprise if this comment won’t be published

Keyword luv is the absolute best little WordPress plugin. Since I’ve been using it for a while I can definitely tell you that it does what it promises to do - generate more traffic and therefore higher returns.

Do follow blogs are awesome. I’m sick of those forums with way too many rules - takes all the fun out of it. Stupid wanna-be forum police!
April 28th, 2009 at 4:15 pm
I’ve seen in the last year (mostly) a big do-follow movement of bloggers, who prefer to offer something in exchange for the people spend their time and read / comment on their blogs.
Some bloggers who switched to do-follow blogs also declared that they noticed a nice increase of visitors and comments. Also, a big increase of spammers, but that’s another story.

The development of the Phoenix AZ region, has inspired the construction of homes, estates and businesses; and unintentionally created an oasis for pests. Readily available food and water, contribute to the growth, development and spread of Phoenix pest control problems. As a result, the proliferation of Phoenix pest control problems like the Fire Ant, Scorpion and Black Widow Spider; have caused more damage to real estate in the United States, than fires and storms combined.

Good work on writing this. I recently wrote something on the same subject for a new squidoo lens. My cousin, who’s a navid blogger, saw this article and mentioned that I might be interested because of the similarities to mine. Since it is related to my niche I’ll bookmark it for future references. thanks xx

Do any of you notice a lot more spam type comments (i.e ?Good post?)? I am considering using the spam plugin, becasue I really don?t want 300 comments saying ?nice read? or ?thanks?. I?m sure comment count will go up, but will comment quality go down drastically? Thanks!
